Superb condition
Elgin Royal Navy WW2 Deck Watch (1941)
This watch is in virtually
mint condition having been continuously protected during its life by the
mahogany protective case
White dial with an
outer 0-60 seconds chapter ring and Arabic hour markers. The dial bears the
broad arrow mark for Government Property at the mid 12 ‘O’ Clock position and
the makers name ‘Elgin’ at the mid 6 ‘O’ Clock position.
Hour, minute and
seconds hands are all in blued steel.
The rear case has the serial number 59061 and
the HS 3 marking which defines the watch as a Hydrographic Stores (HS) Deck
Watch (3).
Heavy chrome plated Keystone base metal
case with steel bezel and screw back.
Very high quality and beautiful 22 jewel nickel damascened
movement serial number 41759061 adjusted to five positions. Movement is signed
B.W. Raymond and is stem setting with hacking facility. Double-roller detached
lever escapement with steel club-tooth escape. Compensation balance, Elinvar
balance-spring.
The watch is 52 mm
diameter and 64mm to the top of the bow. Thickness is 15mm.
The Mahogany Deck Box
has the Hydrographic Department engraved traffolite tally along with a Chronometer
Section paper Form 21 (undated). The box has a grey leather lining to hold the
watch and a leather base, overall in very good condition. There is a glass
covered ‘window’ for viewing the time with the case in the closed position.
